“Revolución” is our unifying cry a todos de la cultura.
One of my best mentors and dearest friends, Zuriel Herran, would constantly cheer me on by saying, “You’ve got this Nicole-Antoinette! ¡Hazlo con ganas y patadas!” He would never just tell me to do something, pero to do it with all my corazón y energía. To do it with passion. To fight. To be loud. To be unapologetically myself when doing anything.
Revolución is quite the same in that it is not simply our theme for this month-long celebration but an action that we hope to see you all fuel your connection to la comunidad long after Hispanic Heritage Month. It is the conversations we have, the songs we sing and proudly dance to, it is uplifting the old and the new icons and stories that we see ourselves in, it is recognizing our unity and deeply ingrained differences.
Zuriel’s words have become my new mantra through my journey to fully accepting and loving my Latinidad. I hope that “Revolución” becomes your new mantra that you take headon. Obvio, con ganas y atadas.
