Embracing Diversity Month
It’s Diversity Month, a nationally recognized celebration that has been around since 2004. Celebrating both the similarities and differences in our unique cultures and traditions is incredibly important. Here are some ways you can embrace diversity in your community this month.
Volunteer
It is incredibly important to volunteer in your community. We all have very busy schedules, but taking the time, especially during this month can be a great way to get involved. For example, a lot of diverse communities need some extra help, take a look on your community website or center and see where help is needed.
Discover New Music
There are many artists who focus on diversity in their lyrics, performances, and more. Supporting these artists can be a good way to celebrate the month. A few artists that have committed to helping their communities, and advocating for others are Usher, Shakira, Meek Mill, Chris Martin, and so many more.
Challenge Stereotypes
Stereotyping in our community is a real issue. The first step to making an effort to stop this in your community is to stop and think about yourself. Have you been unintentionally stereotyping those around you? Take the time this month to be especially aware of your thoughts and actions surrounding those who differ from you.
Try a New Recipe
There are so many recipes that are unique to different cultures and communities. Taking the time to respect these cultures by trying their foods is a great way to get involved during Diversity Month. For some diverse recipes, take a look here.
Educate Yourself
It is incredibly important to educate yourself on diversity. You can look for resources in your community, school, or work. Be on the lookout for a multicultural center in your community that could provide you with information.
Look for Diverse Cinema
Films continue to break boundaries as time continues on. Cinema does a great job displaying diversity in the cast, shots, production, and more. An incredibly diverse movie is Everything Everywhere All at Once, which took home seven awards at the Oscars this year. Some other films that push diversity are Moonlight, Crazy Rich Asians, Black Panther, and so many more.
Try Something New!
While these are all suggestions, you can try to get yourself involved in Diversity Month. But the most important thing is to try something new. Do something out of your comfort zone and let’s all come together and appreciate our differences.
