PAPER Español, a brand new platform dedicated to spotlighting Latine artists, voices and creators, arrives at a time when mainstream media outlets are actively distancing themselves from diversity efforts. PAPER appears to be intentional in its efforts to represent and highlight the Latine community, and will not simply be translating its English content into Spanish, but rather developing new content in Spanish for the platform.
The newly launched platform is set to feature exclusive interviews, cultural coverage, and more. For its very first cover story, PAPER Español tapped Rauw Alejandro. He has had a breakout year with his highly successful Cosa Nuestra world tour, which saw fans from around the world dressing up to the nines for the occasion.
For so long, we have heard the phrase “representation matters” echoed across corporate America and social media alike. Recent months, however, have found legacy media reversing this approach. Teen Vogue is being folded under its flagship publication, Vogue, and has seen the dismissal of its political and disability reporters as a result of the merger. There were also the recent layoffs at CBS News, which have predominantly impacted its diversity and inclusion initiatives.
At a time where there appears to be a concerted effort to erase diverse voices and stories from the media, it is crucial to see legacy media outlets that aren’t backing down, but doubling down on their efforts to invest in our communities.
Our stories are here to stay and so are we.
