The Colombian singer Shakira has been awarded the title of Woman of the Year at Billboard’s first-ever Latin Women in Music event. At Billboard’s launching of Mujeres Latinas en la Música on May 6, we’ll see even more Latin women recognized and celebrated, such as icons like Ana Gabriel, Thalia, and Ivy Queen.
As most know, 2022 was challenging for Shakira due to her very public divorce. Now this year it’s a different story. Although there’s been more news about Shakira’s ex-husband’s relationship and issues regarding the matter, we’ve also been listening to her new hits like “BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53” with the up-and-coming DJ Bizarrap and “Monotonía” with Puerto Rican singer Ozuna.
Many, including Leila Cobo, Billboard’s Chief Content Officer for Latin/Español, and Ronald Day, Telemondo’s president of entertainment and content strategy, are supportive and thrilled to witness Shakira’s acceptance of this well-deserved award.
She has made what could have felt like an embarrassing time of her life into one of the most prosperous times. The 46-year-old Latin pop star continues to break records, produce hits, and while doing so, teaches us how to cope after a heartbreak. Like she once said, “Las mujeres ya no lloran, las mujeres facturan.”
The Latin Women in Music inaugural at the Watsco Center in Miami, Florida, will air on May 7 at 6 p.m. PST on Telemundo.
