Everyone deserves the right to affordable housing, equal job opportunities, rights to an education, healthcare, and voting rights. These are just some of the many social justice issues that the people in the Latino community are facing.

Millions of people are working very hard to change those rules and make things better for those that are struggling to gain access to these basic human rights. One of the most notable women who advocates this cause is Dolores Huerta.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the work of Dolores Huerta and how she has impacted the lives of the people in the Latino community.

How has Dolores Huerta helped the Latino community?

Dolores has paved the way for improving social justices for Latinos by co-creating two organizations National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) with fellow activist César Chávez and labor leader Philip Vera Cruz, and United Farm Workers’ Union (UFW). She also created her own Stockton chapter of the Community Services Organization, which lasted over the span of four decades. All of which are still working to change social justice!

Since developing her organizations Huerta has made a profound impact on the Latino community by helping them to gain better working conditions and improve earnings for workers on farm locations. Additionally, she advocates for women’s rights as she helped to co-found the The Coalition of Labor Union Women with Gloria Steinem, immigrants rights by campaigning for labor movements and exemplifying the importance of voting.

“Latinx peoples account for nearly 18 percent of the U.S. population, but if they don’t vote, their power is diluted,” said Huerta during a virtual conversation with the Kennedy School (2021).

How can we help her accomplish her mission?

The amount of progress that has been made during the fight to change social justices for Latinos is great so far however, there is still a lot more that needs to be done. These causes are important because they affect everyone in the Latino community in South America and Central America.

If you’d like to join Dolores Huerta on her mission to change social justices for the Latino community you should visit the Dolores Huerta Foundation, a website dedicated to spreading awareness about how to end social injustices.
