Every year on June 19 the birth of Artigas is celebrated in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay in southeastern South America. Jose Gervasio Artigas is the father of the Uruguayan nationality, known as a national hero in Uruguay.

About him:

José Gervasio Artigas was born on June 19, 1764 in Montevideo, Uruguay. The fight for justice and freedom ran in his blood since his grandparents also participated in the War of the Spanish Succession from 1701 to 1715.

Artigas joined the army in 1792 during the Anglo-Saxon war and a couple of years later he became lieutenant and began his military career. He proved to be a great leader who managed to organize the gauchos to start a guerrilla war against the British.

Shortly after this, Artigas was promoted to captain, and in his power, he managed to fight for independence against Spain. He was a great cause of the conquest of most of current Uruguay. Therefore, he is known as the father of Uruguayan independence.

How do they celebrate the birth of Artigas in Uruguay?

Uruguayans celebrate Artigas Day with great parades, music, dances, and festivals on every street. They celebrate his pride and nationalism throughout the country.

Why is it important to celebrate this date?

Artigas was not only the father of Uruguayan independence, he also had a great impact on the Latin American nations against the Portuguese and Spanish forces. His ideals proceeded from place to place through the years.

Fact about him: He died at age 86. Close to his death, he asked for a horse and died in the saddle, as a gaucho.

Fun fact: June 19 is also celebrated as Grandparents Day in Uruguay.
