You might be wondering what Matanzas Mule Day is and the background in honor of this specific date.
During the early days of the Spanish-American War, started by the U.S. in Matanzas Cuba in 1889. The war began when the U.S.S Maine, a U.S. Navy Ship, exploded and sank in Havana Harbor. Even though, years after the incident the investigations concluded that the ship exploded due to a fire that ignited in the ship’s stocks. The people didn’t see it like that. They believed it was the fault of Spain and rallied for action. This war lasted for nearly four months.
On April 27, 1898, the U.S. fired on the city of Matanzas, and unfortunately, one of the casualties was a mule. And yes, the mule received a military burial with full honors. It was a simple mule, but 200 people attended the burial. It might sound like a tale or like a leyenda. It might be. Maybe they made it up, in order to humiliate the Americans. Or maybe it happened.
That’s why, on April 27, we commemorate a mule. The symbolism of this mule goes beyond its death, it goes through the nonsense wars at the time, all the human losses, and now, the furry living beings.
