History was made on Tuesday as Claudia Sheinbaum was sworn in as Mexico’s first female president. The historic inauguration saw the former Mayor of Mexico City become both Mexico’s first female president and the first of Jewish descent.
Sheinbaum, a scientist-turned-politician, won the election back in June with almost 60% of the vote. The historical inauguration was held at the Legislative Palace of San Lázaro in Mexico City and was attended by sixteen heads of state and representatives from more than 100 countries, including U.S. First Lady Jill Biden.
Following her oath of office, President Sheinbaum addressed the crowd in Spanish, in a speech where she paid tribute to those who came before her, “those who dreamed of the possibility that one day no matter if we were born as women or men we would achieve our dreams and desires without our sex determining our destiny.”
