Brenda Nicole Peña is native Texan from San Antonio that has a passion for helping others. Her career has revolved around nonprofit communications work.
She is a first-generation college graduate—Alumna of the University of Texas at San Antonio and the University of Texas at Austin. Brenda has a master’s degree in public administration and a bachelor’s degree in public relations. She is the proud author of “The Adventures of Jack Jupiter in ‘Where’s Rocket?” and “Three,” a coming-of-age novel.
Latin Community Hero (Shoutout) - Miriam Torres Sanchez
20-year-old Miriam Torres Sanchez from Highland Park is a Full-time student at UCLA who works multiple jobs and has dedicated her time to volunteering with the Highland City committee. She is a writer writes for Ucla’s latinx newspaper “La Gente Magazine ” focusing on relevant and pressing issues facing our community today. Most recently she helped the Educated Hermanaz in creating a $5,000 scholarship to help Latinas start a trailblazing business. She is the true embodiment of an empowered Latina.
Music Artist Spotlight - Selena Quintanilla
Our artist spotlight is Selena Quintanilla who was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas. Known as the ‘Queen of Tejano Music,’ she made her recording debut in the ’80s, going on to become an award-winning recording artist in the Latin music scene with albums like Amor Prohibido and Selena Live. In 1995, unfortunately she was murdered by the founder of her fan club. Dreaming of You was released after Selena’s death and became a huge hit. The album hit number one on the Billboard Top 200 the week of August 5, 1995.
