Marry Me, Marry me!!! Most people I know want to hear these words at least once in their lifetime. I wanted to be married and ended up doing it twice! But hey, marriage isn’t for everybody, and in some cases, who you thought you were marrying turns out to be someone you didn’t really know. I’m sure this has happened to the triple threat Jennifer Lopez way too many times. In Marry Me, J Lo plays Katalina “Kat” Valdez, a mega superstar singer who is engaged to Bastian, played by Colombian singer Maluma. Unfortunately for Kat, seconds before the ceremony, she learns that Bastian had cheated on her! ESCANDALO! What a twist!
The ceremony was going live streamed for the whole world to see. Still trying to keep her composure, she looks up and locks eyes with the stranger in the crowd named Charlie, played by Owen Wilson, who is holding up a sign that says, “Marry Me”. Kat does the unthinkable and basically says “okay, I’ll marry you” and does so ON THE SPOT. Talk about insane right? The film shares how people from two different worlds can still find true love.
In the supporting cast is the hella funny comedian Michelle Buteau, along with comedian Sarah Silverman, Jameela Jamill (NBC’s The Good Place) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (CBS’ Ghosts). Jimmy Fallon even makes an appearance playing himself as host of NBC’s Tonight Show. One thing I have to mention, I felt that Charlie’s daughter Lou, played by Chloe Coleman, should have had more screen time. It would’ve been nice to see them show more of her relationship with her single dad and math teacher Charlie, and how all of a sudden has a superstar as her new stepmom. I think they should have touched on that aspect a bit more.
So how many movies like Marry Me is J Lo going to star in? Sadly, this is not her best work. It was cute, quirky and pretty funny, but so was The Wedding Planner and Monster in Law. The trailers gave the whole movie away, so there was no real mystery or twist. I feel most people will watch Maluma. He and J Lo have great chemistry and their soundtrack was great too. But the movie was just ehh, ok. I give this a 5 out of 10 in my book.
