On May 8th, we come together to celebrate one of our most beloved animals, the donkey. The donkey has been an animal known to be extremely helpful to humans with many tasks. They are extremely persistent, or some could say stubborn, and that is why we both love and respect them. They are able to live in areas that have extremely hard to live in climates and terrains.
World Donkey Day was first created by a scientist who focused specifically on desert animals, Ark Raziq. He recognizes the species as hardworking, while many forget their contribution to society. They have been used to work long hours, pulling cargo for miles, regardless of distance and climate conditions. There are over a million donkeys in the world continuing to help communities all over.
Donkeys are known to persevere through their entire journey. They are honored in the familiar Christmas song, “El Burrito Sabanero,” which tells a story of a little boy riding a donkey all the way to Bethlehem to see baby Jesus. He takes a donkey, knowing they will be able to endure the entire journey. Take a listen to the classic here.
In 2018, World Donkey Day was officially established as a holiday and has continued to be celebrated every year since. The impact donkeys have on human life needs to be made known to the public. It’s a great holiday to celebrate this year with your family.
