José Gervasio Artigas was born on June 19, 1764 in Montevideo, Uruguay. The fight for justice and freedom ran in his blood since his grandparents also participated in the War of the Spanish Succession from 1701 to 1715.
Artigas joined the army in 1792 during the Anglo-Saxon war and a couple of years later he became lieutenant and began his military career. He proved to be a great leader who managed to organize the gauchos to start a guerrilla war against the British.
Shortly after this, Artigas was promoted to captain, and in his power, he managed to fight for independence against Spain. He was a great cause of the conquest of most of current Uruguay. Therefore, he is known as the father of Uruguayan independence.
