On April 23, the “Spanish Language Day at the United Nations” is celebrated to raise awareness before the organization and the world about the history, culture, and use of the Spanish language.

Origin

Spanish originates from Latin and is considered part of the branch influenced by the Romance language. At first, it was all a mix of Eastern and Western languages in Indo-European places. This Romance language resulted from the mixture of words from different origins, including Greek, Celtic, and English, which arose from the conquest of the Roman Empire.

How was April 23: Spanish Day born?

The United Nations has always sought to incorporate and promote official languages around the world, and for this reason, April 23 is for Spanish. This language is originally from Spain, however, there are more than 450 million native Spanish speakers worldwide. Thus, the third most studied language in the world, after English and French.

Although Spanish originates from Spain, Mexico has the most Spanish speakers in the world.

Where in the world is Spanish the official language?

Spanish is the official language in more than 19 countries, such as:

  • Argentina
  • Costa Rica
  • Dominican Republic
  • Puerto Rico
  • Cuba
  • Spain
  • Equatorial Guinea
Why is it important to learn Spanish?

Spanish, similar to English, is a diverse language. It allows you to travel through more than 20 Spanish-speaking countries and admire their diversity and flexibility.

Spanish opens the doors to recognize and enjoy its music, its literature, and the cinema in its original version. There is nothing better than watching Shrek in Spanish and laughing at the “pimpón es un muñeco” jokes that, in English, do not do justice to this contemporary work of art.

What activities could we do this day?
  1. First of all, watch Shrek in Spanish. Even if you don’t understand it, I assure you it will be the most fun of your day.
  2. Some websites will suggest you “read Don Quixote de la Mancha” by Miguel De Cervantes, but I recommend that you do not, start with something light if you are just learning. You can read Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Something simple and romantic, with a special way of appreciating Mexican culture. Or read the translation of your favorite book.
  3. Listen to the music in Spanish!
  4. Try to learn one sentence per day!
  5. Look for sayings and proverbs in Spanish.

Whatever you do, remember that this language is important, and learning it allows you new opportunities and keeps the language alive.
