If you ever wondered, yes, there’s National Herb Day! But, what is it? What does it mean?
Herb Day was created in 2006 and is celebrated on the first Saturday in May. Herb Day was conceived by the HerbDay Coalition, a group of nonprofit organizations waiting to raise awareness of the significance of herbs and the many ways we can use them. HerbDay Coalition wanted to help with the stigma of using herbs in medical practices, since medical doctors, naturopaths, acupuncturists and more weren’t comfortable incorporating herbs.
Herbs are part of the world of plants, classified into three groups: pot, sweet, and salad. However, after the 1600s, pot herbs began to be called vegetables; while we know them as part of condiments for our food.
Since 2006, events are held at retail stores, botanical gardens, parks, and more throughout North America and around the world. Yes, this day is a celebration, but also, it’s a day to learn more and be aware of their benefits.
The main goal of HerbDay Coalition is awareness and to provide a positive message about herbs and herbalism.
You can be mindful of this day with simple things. Herbs add living decor and a helpful hand in the kitchen. In honor of this day, plant a herb! Herbs like a lot of sunlight when growing, so you will be able to place them near a sunny window indoors while cooking.
Start with the “basic” and most common herbs:
- Basil
- Cilantro
- Dill
- Oregano
- Parsley
- Thyme
- And more!
