Colombian Bunuelos
Have you ever had something in your life that you know is just so bad for you, but you know you can’t resist them anyway. In my case I’m not talking about a toxic ex, I’m talking about delicious Colombian Bunuelos. Bunuelos are a cheesy Spanish treat that is typically fried in oil and can be served with a wide variety of foods. My absolute favorite thing to have with a bunuelo is hot chocolate, I know that may sound crazy but something about the cheese and the chocolate makes it a match made in heaven. I have had my fair share of bunuelos and I know that the most important factors of a good bunuelo are the cheesiness and the fluffiness in the middle. The only problem I have with bunuelos Is that I can only get them when I go to great Colombian restaurants. So in an effort to fill my craving and learn something new, we are going to show how easy and good they can be made at home.
Ingredients.
¾ cup of cornstarch
¼ cup of cavassa flour
½ tsp of baking powder
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 pinch of salt
1 cup of grated cotija cheese
*you can use feta cheese if you are in a pinch*
⅓ cup of grated queso fresco
2 eggs
1 splash of milk (measure with your heart)
Time to Cook!
- Okay, the step we are going to do like most bread products is to combine the dry ingredients first. Add your cornstarch, cavassa flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt into a mixing bowl and combine them well.
- Grate your cheeses if they are not already grated and then add the cup of cojita and the ⅓ cup of queso fresco into the bowl, then give the bowl another mix.
- Once the ingredients are already well combined you can add your two eggs and a splash of milk into the mix. You can use a rubber spatula to mix them all together or to make it easier you can really just use your hand. Combine the ingredients all together until they are all formed into a nice taught ball of dough.
- The next step is to take that one big ball of dough and break them up and shape them into 5 or 6 bunuelos. This recipe makes about 5 or 6, you dont want them to be too small or too big because they won’t cook right, so try your hardest to make them even sizes.
- Heat up a pot and fill it up about a third of the way full with vegetable or canola oil. Keep the heat at medium to high, if the oil is too hot the bunuelos will burn while still being raw inside.
- Let the bunuelos fry in the oil for about 3-5 minutes or until a deep golden brown, and finally, when they are ready take them out and moth them to a wire rack or paper towel to cool for about 5-10 minutes.
- Enjoy your cheesy balls of fried goodness with anything you want or by themselves. I’ll be having mine with homemade hot cocoa. And congratulations you have made delicious bunuelos at home!
With this recipe, you can forget about whatever spot you used to get your bunuelos because you now make them better at home. Impress your friends and family and tell them you love them by serving them a batch of delicious and cheesy bunuelos.
