A very proud day in the Latino community as the first Afro-Latino was named Commissioner of the Brentwood New York Fire Department.
Rasheen Williams grew up in Brentwood and has dedicated this life to serving his community. According to CBSNews.com, “One of Long Island’s most diverse communities, Brentwood is 85% Hispanic and Black, but has never had a black fire commissioner in its 125-year history, until now.”
Williams was awarded the title surrounded by his family, friends, and fellow firefighters. He shared, “I’m humble about it. I accept the mantle, but that’s not what I ran for. I ran to do right by my community, no matter where you are from, you can, if you put your mind to it and you train, you can become anything. But you have to do the work.” Williams’ journey reminds us that through hard work and self-determination, you can strive to do anything that you set your mind to and more!
Congratulations Commissioner Williams on this momentous achievement!
