The Pan American Maccabi Games is one of the largest multi-sporting events that take place every four years in places like Israel(July 2023), Florida (August 2023).
Founded in 1932 by Yosef Yekutieli who was also a professional soccer player, he was inspired to create these games because he wanted to showcase how exceptional the Jewish community was in sports.
An article written by Hilary Danailova shares a quote from Yekutieli, “Jews have a proud history in sports that require ruggedness as well as those that require more finesse. The beauty of Maccabiah is that it brings Jewish athletes together across these sports in those two amazing weeks.”
The Maccabi World Union states, “For 125 years, Maccabi has focused on creating sound Jewish minds in healthy Jewish bodies. Through sports and informal education, we promote Jewish peoplehood and unity to ensure a bright Jewish future with Israel as the center of Jewish life”.
The games invite athletes from all over North America, South America, and Central America to compete in this event from December 27th until January 5th and this year the games are taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Some of the games include rhythmic gymnastics, volleyball, soccer, swimming, and field hockey.
All the money raised from this event will be donated/sent to help the victims affected by the war in Gaza.
