It’s no secret that the weather is unpredictable and storms are just as unpredictable. Just like we can’t predict the chances of sun or rain on a normal day, we can’t predict if or when a tropical storm is going to turn into a category five hurricane and that is what happened in Acapulco Mexico on October 25th.
EarthObservatory.NASA details how the storm changed, “Otis remained a tropical storm until the afternoon of October 24. Then, in a matter of hours, it rapidly intensified into a major hurricane. By 06:25 Universal Time (12:25 a.m. in Acapulco) on October 25, Otis made landfall near the beach resort town with sustained winds of 270 kilometers (165 miles) per hour.”
The following morning destruction and devastation fell upon the town and its residents. The aftermath has left countless families homeless, businesses have been destroyed and food and water shortages are rapidly increasing.
As of November 1st News channels have reported there are a total of 58 people still missing due to the hurricane, while families are mourning the loss of their loved ones.
NBCLatino has shared a deeper look into how this tragic event is affecting many of the residents still waiting to hear about their loved ones.
Maria del Rosario Saravia Delgado is one of the many residents in Acapulco waiting to hear news about her family. She said, “It’s a horrible feeling not knowing where they are,” she added mournfully. “We haven’t had any support from any authority either, from the government, nothing.”
I know that we can’t stop a tropical storm or a hurricane that passes through the islands and states in our country but what we can do is offer our support to those in need.
